Personalized Treatment for Chemotherapy Side Effects is More Effective

Recent research has shown that a one-size-fits-all approach is not as effective for managing the side effects of chemotherapy as a more personalized approach. The November 12thissue of JAMA-Oncology includes the results of research that Dr. Mark Clemons of the Ottawa Hospital conducted focusing on chemo-related side effects, specifically nausea and vomiting.

His research found that most physicians follow established guidelines when treating chemotherapy side effects so the majority of patients receive the same care. This approach does not take into account a patient’s personal risk factors, like the patient’s susceptibility to motion sickness or history of alcohol consumption. By assessing risk factors, physicians can identify patients with high risk levels for certain side effects and adjust their treatment plan accordingly.
