How to Store and Clean Your Fruits and Vegetables

Rinsing Produce
Plain water works wonders as a rinse. Before using your fruits and vegetables, place them under your water tap and use cold running water to rinse your produce for 30 to 60 seconds. Letting the running water rinse your produce for this extended period of time decreases to likelihood of consuming any bacteria or germs.
Scrubbing Produce
While rinsing your produce, you can also scrub it gently with your hands to loosen any dirt. A toothbrush can be used to clean deep crevices, like the top of an apple. If your fruits or vegetables are firm, a vegetable brush can also help.

Soaking Produce
In general, only leafy greens like romaine lettuce, kale, and spinach require soaking to clean properly. This is because dirt clings to the leaves of these types of vegetables. Simply soak the leaves in a container of clean, cold water for a couple of minutes and then dry with a salad spinner. If you don’t have a spinner, gently pat the leaves dry between layers of paper towels.
