A new report released by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are 30.3 million people in the United States that have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Alarmingly, the report found that about a quarter of these people are undiagnosed and are not receiving any treatment for their conditions.
The report also found that about one-third of all adults living in the United States, or about 84 million people, are pre-diabetic, meaning that they are at a higher-than-average risk of eventually developing diabetes. However, in the cases of the people who were found to be pre-diabetic, researchers discovered that less than 12 percent were aware of their conditions.
Reasons for the Lack of Awareness
Although determining the main causes behind the high lack of awareness among those at risk of diabetes was outside the scope of the CDC’s research, the study’s coauthors proposed some possible reasons. The first reason is tied to the general nature of some of the initial symptoms of diabetes. These symptoms include frequent urination and increased thirst, appetite, and fatigue.
